Griha Pravesh: what happens during a house-warming ritual

6 min read

Griha Pravesh welcomes the family and the divine presence into a new home together. It begins outside the main door with a simple sankalpa, where the intention of the ritual is stated aloud.

Vastu shanti follows. Prayers are offered for the land, the structure and the directions of the home, so that the space supports the family living in it.

The kalash procession is the moment most families remember. A vessel of water, mango leaves and a coconut is carried across the threshold with the right foot first, and milk is boiled until it rises over the pot as a sign of abundance.

The ritual closes with prasadam and the first meal cooked in the new kitchen. Family and neighbours eating together in the new home is as much a part of Griha Pravesh as the prayers themselves.
